What does "love" mean?

The question is vague because it means different things to different people in different situations at different times (unlike, apparently, in the Indonesian language). Take a phrase like "I love you" or "I am in love" -- there are a lot of assumptions as to what it means. So, what does it really mean?

Hell if I know anymore. Honestly. My last serious relationship, to me was love and that ended in a thousand small tiny pieces with lasting negative effects on me that to this day.

I'm hoping one day to meet someone to redefine what I think "love" means.

In a none-romantic sense, its the feeling that you would do anything for that person, as I would do anything for my friends and family no matter the expense (not just monetary) without even a hesitation.

I didn't realize how easy it is to sound bitter when discussing these topics. Not pointing at you, but when I'm typing out some responses, I have to really think about what I'm going to say.

No reason to change how you feel if thats how you actually do feel! I was more calling myself out on it, it's really easy to go to the bitter side, I just didn't realize how bitter I was until I tried to respond to a couple of these threads.

I agree with this as love in general. It can be a special friend, family, bike, pet, cars, heck even a house that hold a special place in your heart.

Actually, the love that would make me do anything for that person is the kind of love I'm looking for with soul mate. The love that can make me go crazy and fall down on my knees and the most intoxicating thing on earth.
Romantic love is a deep, intense and eternal that is shared on a very intimate and interpersonal and sexual relationship.

I also agree with this statement since there're uncontrollable things in life such as death, broken heart, hatred, lies, lust, greed, unfaithful, etc etc that cause pain. We're humans, the non perfect being.

for me

Love is about putting someone else's needs before yours. Love is an emotion that is shared. Love is unconditional. Love is being completely open and honest with the other person. Love can hurt. Being completely open and honest can be painful. Love means you have complete trust. Love is being truthful first with yourself then with others. Love is not being judgmental.

^^ Snap to that... I think the unconditional part always gets me. Either for me or the person I am with. But I guess that is why true love is hard to find. I totally agree with putting that person's needs before yours. Goes beyond your 'lover/ SO' but on to kids, friends, family and so on. My mom always told me to truly love somone you must know without a doubt, there is no hesitation. I have only felt that a few times in my life and most has been with family and just a few times with other.

Unconditional love. If such thing exists, then people should love their Xs unconditionally without boundaries. But people are so stubborn and invented divorce.

but do you think divorce came from there being no unconditional love in the marriage or do you think there were already conditions and they didn't follow that 'rule' of love?

There're too many situations and excuses for divorce.
I still think it's wrong to have a divorce, but hey I'm just 1 person.

I think the problem with marriage nowadays is people don't take it seriously, I don't think ~many~ people go into it forever....and know they can get out of it, not easy, but they can still go.

Trust has been lost, too many people being careless with others hearts.

Marriage and divorce are big business. Like subscription based revenue, more recurrence is better for the industry.

Yep, I am being syndical. But, it is a sad truth.

^^^ Points well taken. The marriage industry, in particular, is a huge revenue producing endeavor. It's too bad more people don't slow down, take a deep breath, and look at marriage as a soul and friendship-enriching experience, rather than a fairy-tale "keep up with the Jones'" story book.

However, I will say that if you're in a physically or emotionally abusive marriage, you've gotta get the hell out. Stigma or not, divorce does serve a legitimate purpose in many cases.

So many different types of love... Love for your SO means trusting someone with your heart knowing they have the power to break it. I would do any thing for My husband he knows that, we love each other unconditionally, without judgement. Love with him means when we get old we will take care of each other and see the same sparkle as when we first met, for me that is very powerful and not something to take lightly we will stay in love. As for the rest of the people I love, my children, my grandchildren, my BF, my family. I love them all unconditionally in different ways but I'm not in love with them. However each one of them, at certain times have held my heart in there hands and at that moment there was no one I loved more. Love comes in many shapes forms and emotions, lasting for a moment or a life time, love can be seen and felt. It can sweep you off your feet or it can bring you to your knees in sorrow. Love means being Human.

I think love, to me, kinda comes down to...kinda like the old "merchant of venice" thing...the leaden chest. "To give and hazard all he hath." I've always kinda been empathic towards the people I cared for. My partner's happiness tends to be a tangible thing for me. It's like warmth of sunshine in a cold, rainy world.

So, to be in love with someone, to me, is to take joy from their happiness.

I have to admit though, in recent times I have started to become rather ridiculously cynical about the whole thing.

Yes. If you've ever read the play, it's sort of an old convention; three caskets, one of gold (Who chooseth me shall have what many men desire), one of silver (Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves), and one of lead (Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath). They are laid out for suitors for the princess to choose one. If he choose the right one, he shall win her hand. The trick then, is of course to discern the nature of true love. To not be misled. To give all without knowing what is to be gained in return.

I'm kind of an old-fashioned romantic. I have always remembered that part of the play.

^^^No I haven't....So the third is to Love with all your heart without expecting anything in return. Thats tough.. we all hope love to be returned, but we would be better off if we could Love without expectations. But then again we eventualy would feel used and taken for granted.

Mike... Love is.. when 2 old bats call you at 6am just to give you crap.
